A man identified as Uromchi Okorocha, a resident of Enohia Itim village in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was killed and his body burned by a mob over alleged witchcraft accusations.
According to reports, local youths accused Okorocha of causing multiple deaths in the community through supposed spiritual practices. Instead of reporting the case to the authorities, the mob took matters into their own hands.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that the mob apprehended Okorocha and executed him unlawfully. “They bypassed legal procedures and acted as judge, jury, and executioner,” Adejobi stated.
Police operatives from the Uwanna Division reportedly received a distress call on January 3 and swiftly deployed tactical teams to the scene. However, they arrived too late, as the mob had already killed and burned the deceased’s body. Seventeen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
