At least 13 suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were reportedly killed in recent clashes with troops of the Joint Task Force South-East, operating under “Operation UDO KA.” Additionally, three alleged kidnappers were arrested in separate operations across the region.
The task force spokesperson, Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued in Enugu on Monday. He noted that the operations are part of an ongoing effort to enhance security in the South-East during the festive season.
Unuakhalu disclosed that on December 21, troops from Sector 1 carried out an ambush operation along the Amouka-Umouka Road in Udi Local Government Area. The operation, targeting kidnappers, resulted in the death of one suspect, while others fled with injuries. Recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, magazines, ammunition, and other items, including cash.
In another operation on December 16, troops of Sector 5 neutralized three suspected IPOB members during a clearance operation in the Mbosi and Isseke areas of Anambra’s Ihiala Local Government. Weapons and explosives, including an AK-47 rifle, magazines, Dane guns, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), were seized. A house and shrine believed to belong to an IPOB commander were also destroyed.
Further, on December 14, credible intelligence led to the arrest of three alleged kidnappers in Itungwa, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia. Troops established a checkpoint to intercept the suspects, who attempted to flee but were captured. Items recovered included firearms, ammunition, cash, and other belongings concealed in knapsack bags.
Maj. Gen. Hassan Dada, the Force Commander, commended the troops for their efforts and urged citizens to continue supporting the security forces by providing timely and credible information. Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities through the JTF Operation UDO KA toll-free hotline.
Unuakhalu emphasized that security is a collective responsibility, stressing the need for collaboration between the public and security agencies to ensure peace and safety in the region.
